landmark oratorio Blood on the Fields. An ambitious, sprawling work that explores themes of slavery and freedom, Blood on the Fields cemented Marsalis’ space as one of the most innovative and ambitious composers in Jazz today, taking his cues from other genre-defying artists like Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus.
