Sensory Sensitive Storytime

Type: Children
Location: Meeting Room
Does your child find large groups of people or noisy environments to be overstimulating? Have you considered bringing them to storytime, but worry it might be an overwhelming experience?
We are here to help!

This month on Saturday, July 19th at 10 am, the Jacksonville Public Library is offering a monthly storytime program that caters to children who might enjoy a more relaxed and slower-paced storytime. This program is designed specifically for neurodiverse children or those with sensory processing challenges, but all families are welcome to attend. This program is best suited for ages 3-7.

You might be wondering; how does Sensory Sensitive Storytime differ from our traditional Storytime program? Emphasis on literacy and social emotional learning through reading and singing aloud remain the same, but some accommodations have been made to increase accessibility.

This program is more structured in general to avoid surprises that could be overwhelming for some children.
A visual schedule of activities (book, song, etc.) is provided so that children can be aware of what is to come throughout the program.

Sensory materials such as fidgets, noise canceling headphones, and sunglasses will be available.
A cozy calm-down zone will be provided in the same space in case a child is in need of a break but does not want to leave the program.

Stories and songs will always be followed by a sensory-friendly craft or activity (such as sensory bin exploration) at the end of the program.

Registration is required. Please email Courtney at clangdon@jaxpl.org or call the library at 217-243-5435 to register.
